Paramore feels love from daybreak to ‘Twilight’ -by Nicole Kieper

Truth is, even if Paramore hadn’t added a huge single (“Decode”) to the popularity monsoon that was the Twilight movie at the end of 2008, 2009 still would have been a major year for the Franklin rock crew.

The band spent the summer opening arena shows for the reanimated No Doubt, released an assured — and assuredly successful — third LP in September called brand new eyes, and sold out a mix of venues both mammoth (the U.K.’s Wembley Arena) and vaunted (Ryman Auditorium) as headliners. And, you know, getting billed next to the sexy vampires didn’t hurt any.

We checked in with Paramore singer Hayley Williams the night of the band’s Wembley show, as the five-piece crew’s biggest career year yet was winding down. (Check back here Monday for the final piece in our Year in Review.)

On touring with No Doubt:

“My initial feeling was . . . ‘Yes!’ ” Williams said of getting the opening-slot invite. “There was no hesitation. The guys felt the same. Even though we had an entire album to write and record, we knew we didn’t want to miss out on the tour. The greatest thing we learned from being around them was that it can work — you can be in a band with your friends for 20 years and go farther than you ever thought possible. They were incredibly inspiring.”

On selling out the healthy-sized Wembley Arena in a matter of hours:

“When our manager came to us and said we were gonna go for a show at Wembley, I told him he was nuts,” Williams said. “I didn’t think it’d go over well. There were a lot of naysayers once word got out. But when the tickets went up for sale and then were all gone by the end of the day ... all I could do was laugh. It was a great feeling. It made me feel like we’ve done this right. To be able to go from playing venues in London like Underworld and Mean Fiddler all the way up the scale to Wembley is a really special feat. I’m proud of us and of our fans. We just finished the show. ... It was one of my favorite nights in my entire life, thus far. So overwhelming. I’ll never forget it."

On the band joining the MTV Unplugged legacy by adding its own episode:

“I was excited about the fact alone that they were bringing the series back,” Williams said. “Obviously, we’ve all seen Nirvana’s Unplugged performance. I own Dashboard Confessional’s Unplugged CD/DVD. I get choked up listening to it sometimes . . . there’s something about all those performances on Unplugged that is so intimate.

“You’d think with the millions of people that watch, it wouldn’t feel like that. But when we went there and had our turn on the show, it felt just the same. We got to spend a lot of time there hanging out with our fans and it made for a better show.”

On the success of the Twilight–soundtracking “Decode,” including earning a best song written for motion picture, television or other visual media Grammy nomination (their second nod, after one for best new artist at the 50th Grammys):

“ ‘Decode’ is one of our favorite songs that we’ve written as a band. It’s so simple, but the feeling isn’t really matched by anything else we have,” the singer said. “Not that it’s better than the rest of our songs, just different. We loved being able to be a part of a movie soundtrack at all . . . the fact that it happened to explode and become one of the biggest movies of our generation was like, ‘Wait a minute, what!?’
“I think a lot of people expect us to be a bit embarrassed, or something. But we’re extremely proud of it. I think that we got lucky that we were able to gain so many fans by contributing to the soundtrack, but we still aren’t defined by Twilight and ‘Decode.’ ”

On earning their highest chart debut to date with brand new eyes, landing at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and being edged out only by Barbra Streisand:

“All week I was telling people not to say it, not to tell me we were No. 1,” Williams said. “The hype made me nervous, even though down deep I was so excited about some of the reports I was getting. Coming in at No. 2 actually felt better than what I would think the top spot might feel like. There is a part of me that loves being the underdog and after a lot of success over the past years, it was nice that we put up a good fight, placed high but still came out sort of the underdog amongst such big names. Is that weird? I mean, I was definitely excited to have beaten out Mariah (Carey)!”

Hey guys,

Do any of you have camcorders (NOT digital cameras) that are good for shows?
I'm thinking about saving up for one so I can film some concerts.

I have a Sony HD camera.. it uses a hard drive to save the videos and the strong vibrations from shows causes it to shut down.. lol :( lame i know..
So I need a better one, I guess using a memory card/stick

If you have any suggestions, can you link a video also?

by now i feel like hayley has given up all faith in lj. i doubt she will see this, but can we have some sort of paramore love post?

it doesn't matter who they are in a relationship with. by making a big deal about it, we are pushing them away. be happy for them.

show some love. tell how paramore has changed your life. i bet they have in one way or another. say something nice about each member of the band. it shouldn't be very hard. just do anything to show them you love them. they really deserve it. they've worked so hard for us and some, not all, of their fans treat them terribly.

mine:

through paramore i have found so many other amazing bands. they act like normal people, which you don't see much anymore. the way they interact with fans is incredible, and it would be better if we weren't pushing them away. i want to thank them all for all the opportunities they create for us to meet them and see them.

hayley, jeremy, josh, taylor, and zac you are all so talented. we love you all. thank you all for what you have done in the past 5 years as a band.

yes. i know that not everyone says stuff about their relationships and all that. but one comment can hurt a lot.
